Rough Cut Of Bag Scene

This was our first time at filming something.

We were given the idea to film a bag swap so we tried our best to film a successful rough cut. This was our first practise at using the camera equipment, putting the footage on to the computer and opening it in Final Cut Pro for editing. However, there were things we forgot to do, such as an over the shoulder shot. We decided to refilm our rought cut of a bag swap so a new version will have to be filmed and posted soon !

Thriller Sub Genres

When asked to think about thriller sub-genres four particular ones come to mind;

Political Thriller

Such as Enemy of the state, Being interested in politics give me a instant appeal to thrillers based around a country and or their government, with storylines usually showing elements of anarchy or government corruption with a single character usually having to 'save the day' political thrillers also appeal to me.

Supernatural Thriller

Such as Paranormal Activity, Thrillers that involve out of world or elements that are not true to reality usually interest me alot as they have a large appeal due to their ability to show things and base a story around somthing that isant possible, i also have always enjoyed sci-fi films so this sub-genre sometimes combines elements of sci-fi with thrillersw

Action Thriller

Such as Deja-vu, these are the sort of generic one man hero based films in which it is usually a male character going up against seemingly impossible odds or tasks to achieve a end goal and 'save the day' this type of thriller does not really interest me as they are usually quite simple and not as interesting to me as any of the other sub-genres of thriller.

Psychological Thriller

Such as Inception, This is my favorite type of thriller film, and the type that is currently inspiring me the most for the task of creating a 2 miniute thriller intro. Psychological thrillers are about provoking thought in the viewer and keeping the viewer heavily engaged un the film and paying attention, I would like to base my thriller intro around the theme of psychology as thinking of ideas to engage the viewer and give the sense of 'wanting to watch the film again to understand' appeals to me greatly and the feeling left after seeing such a film is somthing i enjoy

Suspense in The Stepfather

The Stepfather is a 2009 thriller film directed by Nelson McCormick, it is a remake of a 1987 film of the same name, the film follows a character 'The Stepfather' as he befriends and enters relationships with divorced women only to murder the entire family later on. The film is a good example of a thriller film containing many elements and devices specific to the genre.

I noticed three particularly 'Thrilling' scenes within the film; firstly. When the stepfather enters the neighbours house to kill the old woman who is living there, the False Plateau device in which is viewer is led to think that the climax of a suspenseful moment is about to be reached when in-fact the real climax is a few shots or seconds later, The woman turns around and the viewers at this point from the use of sound and camera shots assume the stepfather is going to be behind her when instead it is one of her cats, when she turns back around the stepfather is there and pushes her down the stairs.

Sub-genres are different categeories of films within a particular genre. There are many different sub-genres in the thriller category, and some are;

My favourite sub genres are action, mystery and psychological. I prefer these because they draw my attention to them especially as the plot may be revealed to the audience and I will want to see what is revealed from the characters. My favourite mystery thriller is 'Phone Booth' (2002).

Phone Booth is about a man who is held hostage in a telephone booth by a sniper. It is directed by Joel Schumacher. After work, the main character Stu (Colin Farrell) phones his girlfriend and rudely dismisses a pizza delivery man. After this, the phone rings and he answers, this is where the films begins to create suspense. place.

Intertextuality

Intertextuality is the visual referencing between films; having aspects of one film incorporated into another film. This could be "borrowed" camera angles, sound effects, methods of editing and editing skills, and certain aspects of mise en scene that you have seen in other films of the same genre or maybe something completely different.

For example, in the well known thriller 'Psycho' (1960) there are many different things that we see in the shower scene that are also seen in the climatic scene where 'The Stepfather'. The mise en scene of the bathroom in both of the scenes, which consists of the white shower curtains and white bath tubs, and the camera angle from above the shower head and also the characters pulling down the shower curtains as they fall, show intertextuality.

Many other films have "borrowed" aspects of the film, such as:

What Lies Beneath:

- White curtains, white bath. (mise en scene)

- High angle shot above shower (camera)

- The continuous running water (sound)

Fatal Attraction:

- Looming murderer

- White bathroom, white tiles

- stabbing; high raised arm, big knife

The Stepfather:

- Pulling down the shower curtain in the bathroom

- The same "wrapped in shower curtain" scene

Succubus (Student Thriller):

- showerhead shot

- running water sound

- point of view shots being viewed

Scary Shots

Ive been looking at different thriller openings and i noticed that there is a few shots which increase the scary or suspense factor.

 These are mainly extreme-close ups and close-ups.
