Intertexuality

Intertexuality describes the visual references between films. All different films borrow or even copy little ideas from each other. For example, you may recognise certain camera angles, aspect of mise en scene, sounds or methods of editing in more than one film.

A well known thriller 'Psycho' has a shower scene which has been recreated in many other thrillers and even horrors using all the aspects.

 

The Stepfather is a film that recreates this scene using the same mise en scene, including a white bath tub, white shower curtains in a white tiled bathroom. It also imitates the high angle, mid close up shot which shows the actor face and shoulders in the shower. Another aspect, which was been borrowed was the sound of the running water.
